Anonymous: I feel that masturbation is really good for you, and I feel happier/better in general when I've recently masturbated (it even improves my attitude and grades), but my family doesn't agree and will call me out on it in church if they know it's happening. I tend to make noise. It's totally involuntary and I rarely notice. How can I either teach myself to be quieter or cover up the sound? (I'm a guy, if that changes anything)

    Hi anon,

Masturbation is a completely normal and healthy sexual behavior. If someone decides to or decides not to masturbate it is a private decision. I’m sorry to hear that your family tells other people, that must be very embarrassing.

It is completely normal for people to make noises when they are masturbating or engaging in sexual behaviors. As you said, it can be involuntary. Since this seems to be how your family knows, you might want to try only masturbating when you are alone in the house or have complete privacy.

You could also try talking to your parents about how them telling your church about you masturbating makes you feel. If there is another trusted adult in your life who is sympathetic you may also decide to talk to them about what is happening to your parents.

    I hope this helps.
