Sperm can live in the female body for about five days. If ovulation occurs while sperm are present then pregnancy is possible. Vaginal discharge or cervical mucus will not prevent pregnancy from occurring if the female in not on hormonal birth control.

Hormonal birth control can work in two ways, it can prevent ovulation and it can thicken the cervical mucus so that sperm cannot enter the vagina. However, if a female is not on hormonal birth control discharge will not prevent the sperm from getting into the vagina and possibly causing a pregnancy.
